The refinishing process works like this:
First the case parts are removed and disassembled. Next layers of special refinishing paper are taped to the piano to prepare it for the finish remover.
Then the finish remover is applied to remove all the old finish.
Once the remover has eaten through the old finish it is removed from the case and parts.
The case and parts are now rubbed down to ensure that any remaining remover and old finish are removed.
Sanding, veneering, and wood repairs are now performed as needed.
After all the wood repairs are made, the pores of the wood are filled with pore filler.
When the pore filler is dry it is sanded down level with the surface - closing off all the wood's pores.
After the porefiller is sanded down the wood stain is applied.
The stain is allowed to set up until the desired color is achieved, next it is lightly grained in, then wiped completely dry.
Coats of sanding sealer are next applied. After they are cured they are sanded down. Then coats of clear lacquer are applied over the cured sealer.
The piano is then carefully wheeled out of the refinishing booth, and the fresh clear lacquer is allowed to cure.
Once the clear lacquer finish is cured we wet sand down the case and parts, and then rub them out with several rubbing compounds to achieve the desired finish sheen - either matte, satin, or semi-gloss sheen.
Finally the parts are all assembled back together and installed onto the piano.
In addition to refinishing the cabinetry of the piano we also replate the metal hardware (the hinges, screws, locks, lyre pedals, wheels, etc.) - Plating can be done in either chrome or brass. Before:
